Assassination attempt

The church of the Gorgoepikoos was built in the 12th century. It became a library in the early years of Otto’s reign. In 1861, there was an attempt to assassinate Amalia outside the church by the eighteen-year-old law student Aristides Dosios attempted to assassinate Queen Amalia outside the church. He shot her while she was taking her evening walk. Fortunately, the shot that pierced the city’s evening tranquillity and caused consternation among the Athenians failed to find its intended target.
