Carcasses

Apart from the people, the streets of Athens were full of animals, but fate often played cruel games. Passers-by were constantly confronted with dead crows, trampled chickens, or dogs whose carcasses remained untouched on the road forever since nobody seemed to care about removing them. The French journalist Edmond About claimed that if a horse died in downtown Athens, the remains would stay in place until the vultures ate it.
