Cicadas

The city fell quiet in the afternoon as the heat forced the Athenians to search for coolness and shade inside. Only the cicadas’ mating call could be heard. In the afternoon, however, a huge crowd poured into the cafes of Syntagma Square. At the same time, affluent Athenians took a stroll on Stadiou Street or in the shade of the pepper trees planted by Queen Amalia on the street leading to Phaleron Bay.
