Donkeys and bearded priests

Some Bavarians opposed the demolition of the mediaeval monuments on the Acropolis. The destruction of these picturesque remains deprived the city of something irreplaceable. The Bavarian military officer Carl Wilhelm von Heideck, tired of simply endorsing the decisions of the other regents, preferred to sit in the market and sketch donkeys and priests. He claimed that these two elements served as the quintessential component of the Greek landscape.
