Kosynthos River
Kosynthos or otherwise “Xiropotamos” (Dry-river or Kuru çay in Turkish) is the large, torrential river of Xanthi, which creates a natural barrier in the Old Town, separating it from the Samakov district. The river’s water supply has always been unstable, with a high dependence on rainfall, resulting in long periods of draught. The myth of Hercules and the horses of the Thracian king Diomedes was associated with the river, as it is said that the ferocity of the horses was due to the fact that they drank water from the river Kossinitis (another name of the Kosynthos river during antiquity).
