Koulas

The soft breeze blowing through the columns of the Parthenon at sunset helped visitors forget the echo of the horrifying cries that once emanated from the infamous “Koulas” or “Goulas”, the square tower near the Propylaea. Made with stones from Piraeus and marble from older monuments on the Acropolis to serve as an observation post during the Frankish rule, the tower became a storage facility for salt during the Ottoman period. During the Greek War of Independence, it served as a prison. The Greek military and political commander Odysseas Androutsos was executed here in 1825.
