Pausilipum. Τhe German-speaking residents and visitors in Athens

There was a Turkish vineyard on Patission Street, where the Athens Polytechnic now stands. A Bavarian couple bought it with financial assistance from a Swiss painter to set up a lounge and hotel called Pausilipum for German-speaking residents and visitors in Athens. They even added a bowling green so that the sound of the bowls would remind them of their homeland. Thus, they achieved an authentic German atmosphere “under the blue and clear Attic sky”.
