Porto Lagos the port of Xanthi

Porto Lagos is the northernmost port on Greek territory and serves as the port of Xanthi. It is located at the exit of Vistonida lake towards the Thracian Sea, next to the well-known monastery of Agios Nikolaos. The map’s dating (1804) shows that the port was known by this name in the 19th century. Its proximity to the city of Xanthi played a pivotal role in the growth of the tobacco trade at the same period. In fact, the area of the tobacco warehouses near the city’s exit was developed around the road axis that led to the port of Porto Lagos, to facilitate the movement of goods.
