Telling Time

Immediately after the city’s liberation, the mosque in the centre of the Parthenon became a barracks for a Bavarian company with a few cannons. Otto’s defence minister believed that the Acropolis was the key to Athens’ security and should remain in operation as a fortress. So every day, at twelve, a cannon from the fort announced to the Athenians that it was noon.
