The pepper song

Queen Amalia loved gardening and made efforts to plant trees in the streets of Athens. Today’s Amalias Avenue was roughly laid out during Otto’s reign when it acquired a double row of pepper trees. Amalia adored them because they grow fast and are tolerant of heat and drought. The beautiful trees inspired a popular love song: “In the Zappeion I saw you for the first time / and later in the square / and in the row of trees / I told you that I love you.”
