Women at the fountain

Athens suffered from a terrible lack of water. Interruptions in water supply from ancient aqueducts were frequent, while the water became very scarce during prolonged periods of drought. The women had to visit public fountains to fill their pitchers. Arguments and brawls were all too frequent, ending in screams and broken jugs.
