During this time, the headquarters of the kaza (Ottoman district) were relocated from Yenisea to Xanthi. On the outskirts of the town, where Plateia Demokratias (central square) stands today, the Ottoman political, social, and religious nucleus was established. The Ottoman administration building was erected there, which served as a Court of Justice after Xanthi&#8217;s incorporation into Greece. It was a typical public building of stone masonry in a neoclassical style with a symmetrical layout. Eleftherios Venizelos delivered a speech from its balcony in 1920.
