Together with the Monastery of St. Nicholas in Porto Lagos, they form a \u201ccross\u201d that, according to tradition, protects the city from disasters. Although the exact dates of their founding are unknown, local tradition traces these monasteries back to Byzantine times. After all, between 950 and 1350 AD, the Rhodope Mountains were home to numerous monasteries, where important figures, such as St. Gregory Palamas, once lived. Unfortunately, the archives of these monasteries have been lost due to damage or looting, making it difficult to fully reconstruct their history.
