But the teaching conditions were almost inhumane. According to a journalist of the time, the first primary school in Athens was in a semi-basement in Plaka. The students&#8217; voices originated from a dark, dusty place full of fleas and unbearable stench. The teacher&#8217;s eyes were red from the dust that endangered the health of pupils and adults.
