Xanthi’s hospital
The necessity for a hospital in Xanthi was evident from the beginning of the 20th century and the Demogerontia (council of Greek community leaders under the Ottoman rule) of Xanthi decided to establish such a facility on April 11, 1902. For almost a decade (1919-1929) the hospital operated within a municipal building, presently the 3rd Primary School. It was then relocated to IX Merarchias Street, while, at the same time, the construction of a new hospital began. This new hospital, depicted in the photograph, was located above the northern end of the old town, in the Lefkou Pyrgou area. Eleftherios Venizelos was present during the foundation stone–laying ceremony, while the hospital was inaugurated on December 22, 1935. The building served as the hospital until 1984, when it was transferred to the private clinic ‘Galenos’. Since 1996 the hospital of Xanthi has been operating in its current location, in the Neapolis area.
