3 September 1843 Revolution
The 3 September 1843 Revolution was the most decisive event of Otto’s reign. The earliest eyewitness accounts claimed that the people gathered in front of the palace and shouted “Long live the Constitution”, while the army defended Otto, crying “Long live the king”. The reality was different. The military actively participated in the revolution and demanded a constitution, while the people sat in silence and watched what was happening from the safety of the square. The military band played all night to entertain the thousands of people assembled outside the royal residence.
