King Otto’s Athens

Follow Miltos Karellis, a young man from Roumeli who leaves his impoverished mountain village in the mid-19th century in search of a better life in the emerging capital of the newly established Greek state. As you walk through Syntagma Square, Stadiou Street, Anafiotika, and other emblematic locations in the historical center of Athens, Miltos’ life unfolds through soundscapes, narration, and scenes of the era: from a shoeshine boy in the streets of the city to a successful merchant and father of two children striving to gain acceptance in Athenian high society. This story brings to light the city’s transformations, tensions, and aspirations through the personal journey of one family.

Beyond Miltos’ story, the experience is enriched with standalone soundscapes that bring to life everyday moments from 19th-century Athens. You’ll find yourself in the garden of the “temporary palace” listening to Queen Amalia converse with her Ladies-in-Waiting, witness a heated argument between women by the banks of the Ilissos River, hear Western music during the palace’s first ball, and encounter people running from jackals near the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Historical and fictional figures coexist in narrations inspired by authentic sources and archival material, offering a multisensory experience that transforms a simple walk into a journey through time.
