Civil conflict

Loudovikou Square (today’s Kotzia Square) was named in honour of King Otto’s father. The square was created because the presence of streams made it impossible to erect buildings. In 1863, bloody clashes known as Iouniaka took place here. The surrounding buildings were pierced with bullets, and the walls were painted red with the blood of soldiers killed in the riots. For a long time, the street corners were full of stones that the mob had used to build roadblocks.
