A different view of the bazaar

The area that now constitutes the central square of Xanthi was a vibrant hub where itinerant merchants would peddle their wares, horse-drawn carriages would pass by, and people from diverse backgrounds coexisted, speaking different languages and practicing various religions. This bustling locale served as the city’s bazaar, initially held every Sunday, until the year 1919 when it was relocated to its present site, where it continues to take place to this day, now held every Saturday. This shift occurred during the period of Bulgarian occupation. A glimpse into that era is captured in the photo, showcasing shop signs inscribed in the Bulgarian language.
