In 1835, there were two primary schools in Athens with about eighty students. But the teaching conditions were almost inhumane. According to a journalist of the time, the first primary school in Athens was in a semi-basement in Plaka. The students’ voices originated from a dark, dusty place full of fleas and unbearable stench. The teacher’s eyes were red from the dust that endangered the health of pupils and adults. So studying in the countryside seemed like the best option.
