Athenians at the “Elysia” cinema-theater

Although a provincial town, Xanthi was, since the end of the 19th century, a regular stop for the touring Athenian and European troupes, often serving as a stopover on their way to Istanbul. It is known as an urban legend in Xanthi (or a true fact?) that the famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt visited the city in the early 20th century. Among the many Athenian troupes, that of Marika Krevata came to the city in 1938, to present the operetta “Wedding Girls” by A. Sakellarios and D. Evaggelidis at the “Elysia” cinema-theater. As the advertisement informs us, the troupe “spared no effort and expense to present the play… exactly as it was performed in Athens”.
