Dance in the countryside
Not all Athenians had fun in the same way. Working-class people usually attended dances in the countryside with a particular preference for folk dances like ballos and syrtos. The upper classes, for their part, preferred formal receptions, where they could have fun with German dances to Strauss’s tunes. At these receptions, however, Greek was hardly heard, as all the guests chose to speak French without a trace of an accent.
