Dancing in Thiseio

The Arvanites of Athens used to celebrate with open-air dances near the temple of Theseus. On Easter Tuesday, 1836, two thousand people gathered there. They danced to their heart’s delight, accompanied by a small flute (which sounded like a Scottish bagpipe) and a drum whose rhythm changed from fast to slow and vice versa in an atmosphere of lively enthusiasm.
