Matsinios School
In the second half of the 19th century, Xanthi had begun to evolve into a thriving urban center of the region. The reorganization of the city’s Greek Orthodox Community and the economic rise of its members had a direct impact on community education as well. In that decade, the first educational institutions for the Greek Orthodox residents of the city were established. One of them was the Matsinios School, which was sponsored by a local dignitary and alderman, Michael Matsinis. In addition to sponsoring the school’s establishment, Matsinis secured through bequests a part of the necessary resources for its operation.
