Saint George of old Xanthi
The oil painting by Xanthi’s painter Christos Pavlidis (Antalya, Asia Minor 1913 – Xanthi 1998) depicts the Christian church of Saint George in the homonymous neighborhood in the old town. It was rebuilt in 1835, according to an inscription on the church’s exterior, possibly at the expense of the tobacco merchant Kyriakos Nalbadoglou, whose tomb is located inside. The church was built after the devastating earthquakes of 1829, possibly on the ruins of an earlier Byzantine church, as according to some sources in 1394 there was in the area a pilgrimage site with the same name. The Crucified Christ, which was painted by Fotis Kontoglou in 1959, is preserved in the Holy Bema of the church.
