The clock tower of Xanthi

Close-up of Xanthi’s central square clock tower, in its original form, possibly taken from the minaret of the mosque that stood in the square. The clock tower was built in 1870, in art nouveau style, and was later renovated in the 1930s, acquiring the form it has today. The clock numbers in the photograph are the so-called “Eastern” Arabic, as the “Western” Arabic is what we use in our daily life today. In the background Vasileos Konstantinou Street leads to the old town.
