The indestructible church
This small triconch church that watches from above the Old Town of Xanthi is the catholicon (the main church) of the monastery of the Taxiarchs. The 1829 earthquakes, which almost leveled the city of Xanthi, resulted in no earlier church surviving, with the exception of this one. Based on surviving frescoes of the Sanctuary, it can be dated to the Middle Byzantine period. The catholicon of the monastery also survived a fire that broke out in the monastery in the 1970s.
