The “lost” castle

Nowadays, the city of Xanthi is characterized by its peri-urban forest, which however did not exist at the beginning of the 20th century. The photo shows the Acropolis district, the last neighborhood one encounters when walking up the narrow streets of the Old Town. The two constructions on the once bare hills are the Ecclesiastical school of the Taxiarches Monastery to the left and the ruins of the castle of Byzantine Xanthia to the right. The Ecclesiastic school still dominates the city’s skyline, while the second one is “lost” in the dense peri-urban forest, which was planted in the 1930’s.
