The street market square

The street market square, in the beginning of the 20th century, with a hexagonal fountain and the clock tower behind the tree. This location is today’s central square of Xanthi. “The transfer of the Yenice kaza (=ottoman district) seat… from the town with the same name (Yenice) to Xanthi, took place….in 1872… Xanthi began to rise as a notable tobacco production centre, at least since the beginning of the 18th century. The town centre, where all the major functions of the new capital were taking place, was defined within the perimeter of the market square.
