The temple of the Akathist Hymn in an oil painting

The oil painting by Christos Pavlidis, painted in 1949, depicts a Christian church in the old town of Xanthi, which is dedicated to the Akathist Hymn and dates to 1860-1. You can see the entrance to the church courtyard to the right, the characteristic steps in the center of the painting and in the background its bell tower.
Christos Pavlidis (1913-1998) was born in Antalya, Asia Minor and after 1922 he came to Greece, where he studied at the School of Fine Arts. In 1946 he settled in Xanthi and for years was the only painter in the city. He worked as a professor at the then Ecclesiastical School and maintained an atelier. Today his works are exhibited in the Municipal Gallery in the old town of Xanthi.
