The tobacco of Xanthi

During the summer months, every open space in the old town of Xanthi was filled with frames
and “hangers” with rows of tobacco leaves, drying in the sun. Threading and drying were only
two of the many difficulties of tobacco production and processing, which succeeded one another
throughout the year. Apart from the big tobacco merchants’ mansions of Xanthi, which were
examples of the wealth brought by tobacco, small yards like the one in the photo, were the proof
of the inextricable link between tobacco and the daily life of all the people in Xanthi.
