The turkey

The banks of the river Ilissos were a small green oasis in the arid and dusty Attic landscape. The river was little more than a shallow stream, but the banks were lush and verdant. It was not uncommon for passers-by to see a wild turkey strutting and gobbling. They would also frequently hear the beaters of the women washing their clothes in the clear waters of Ilissos.
