The wolf
The Temple of Olympian Zeus area was a popular destination for those keen to take a walk, but both lonely visitors and groups of friends had to be careful: the surrounding countryside was so deserted that jackals occasionally came down from the mountains. Their calls could be heard in the nighttime, and there were even some attacks against people. The appearance of a wolf among the temple’s surviving columns was even more impressive on September 3, 1838.
