Turkish delight
In a country without roads, visitors usually arrived by sea. The route from Piraeus to Athens was one of the first to be built in Otto’s kingdom. In 1836, eight kilometres had been completed, and passengers disembarking from ships in Piraeus could proceed to Athens either on foot or in a carriage crossing the dusty plain with a mandatory stop for Turkish delight and water in Parages, a makeshift shack in the middle of a vineyard in present-day Moschato.
