“Kireciler” cigarettes from Xanthi
The success of Xanthi as a tobacco-producing region was due, in addition to the intense activity of tobacco merchants, to the fact that the so-called “basmas”, an aromatic tobacco of “oriental type” and of high quality, flourished in the region. This tobacco was highly regarded and attracted large European tobacco companies to the region. One of the areas where this tobacco was cultivated and flourished was the village of Kireciler, today known as Chryssa, a modern “suburb” of Xanthi. “Kireciler” cigarettes were initially released by the tobacco manufacturer David-Joseph Ardittis, while later the brand was “adopted” by the Cooperative Tobacco Industry of Greece.
